No one would think of eating food that fell in the toilet bowl but it turns out it may still be cleaner than if you dropped it in the kitchen sink. That’s because few of us disinfect our sinks as often or as well as we do our toilet bowls.
So, how do you ensure your kitchen stays spotless and germ-free? Here are some of our favourite suggestions:
- Fresh fridge: Cleaning your refrigerator can be a big job but it doesn’t have to take long. From coil brush to stainless steel doors, here’s how you can get it flawless in under 20 minutes.
- Bulk disinfection: The surest way to clean stove knobs, brushes, plastic utensils, refrigerator drawers, drain catches and sponges? Fill up your dishwasher.
- Wipe it up: The sponge in your sink may be crawling with critters. Instead, use Clorox or Windex wipes to clean your counter and stove tops, as well as fridge handles, toaster and microwave. If you have a built-in microwave/fan above your stove, remember to wipe underneath it and throw greasy fan filters into the dishwasher once a month.
- Microwave mess: Place a wet paper towel in your microwave for 3 minutes to soften the grime, then wipe it down with a wipe.
- Oven odour: Fishy or greasy smell in your oven? Wipe up drips with a vinegar-soaked towel, then fill a baking dish halfway with water and a teaspoon of vanilla extract, lemon juice or vinegar and leave it in the oven on low heat for half an hour. Prefer self-cleaning your oven? Here’s why you probably shouldn’t.
- Garbage leaks: Keep an open bag at the bottom of your trashcan to avoid leaks, and rinse out the can once a month with soap and water.
And that dirty kitchen sink? The best way to keep it truly clean is to wash it with bleach and water every day.

Did you know: Alka-Seltzering your vases
Can’t get your hand down a vase to clean the dried residue? Fill it halfway with water, drop in a couple of Alka-Seltzer tablets, wait a few minutes and rinse. (Source)
Great ideas for cleaning. Thank you.
It is a habit in our household to always sanitize the sink, dishcloth and sponge when we finish doing dishes. The Clorox sits under the sink with the dish detergent. I soak my dish cloths and towels in hot water and bleach, My sink is 38 years old and still shines. Great ideas to remove odours and cleaning
ive used this method with the alka seltzer and it works better than a charm
When I run the dishwasher I put my dishwasher cloth on the top rack. The cloth gets sterilized while the dishes get washed. Just remember to remove the cloth because it does not get dried.
Good advice.
Helpful cleaning suggestions. One suggestion that I couldn’t envision was the open bag under the trash can to catch the leaks. I have always put a garbage bag in my trash can to enable easier dumping of garbage. Keeps my garbage can and my hands much cleaner.
Cleaning vases or things too small to get hands in with Alka-Seltzer tablets was very helpful for me.
Thank you for all of the useful cleaning suggestions.

I have a double black sink . Can’t use bleach on that … What would u suggest???
Peroxide……….one of the best cleaners. I cannot tolerate bleach. It does awful things to me. I by the alternative bleach that uses peroxide as it’s base. Works wonderful in the washer and as a cleaner. Or by some tea tree oil mix with water and you have a gentle but vicious on bacteria.
Bleach is bot recommended for septic systems…..so what can be used for cleaning instead ?
For myself I recently ( within the past 3 years found that baking soda will lift grub from the kitchen and bathroom. Something just stuck in the frying pan or something boiled over and left a mess on the stove or even cleaning the toilet. Soak all of the above in baking soda and water. Works like magic.
My main cleaner is Peroxyde for most of my cleaning. It kills bacteria and germs. Its safe for critters, children and the environment. You should be promoting non-toxic products.
I used to receive coupon offers, ie. 16000 points with my Shoppers card if purchasing $100 worth of merchandise. I have checked with friends who are still receiving the offers but for whatever reason, I am not. Am wondering what happened.
The hints for cleaning I’ve read so far, are excellent! Trying the for vases! Who knew?
To stop a smelly garbage can before you put a garbage bag in the can drop a paper towel with a few drops of pinesol or fresh smelling cleaner on it and put it in the bottom of the can before the bag
Great ideas for cleaning.A drop of bleach in the dishwasher kills germs, refreshed the smell and clean the tea stains.
